On Wednesday, as one of our science lessons we attempted to make thermometers. The method to make it was quite simple :
If you want to do this experiment be sure to not get the food colouring on your clothes, and to seal the lid quite firmly.

We have a couple of photos showing us at work and our results:
- Firstly we got our resources which were : A clear glass jar (the jar must have the lid) , straw, water, food colouring (we used red food colouring) and either modelling clay or blue tack, although we used blue tack.
- Secondly, we made a hole on the lid of the jar, large enough for the straw to fit in comfortably.
- Next, we filled the jar about 1/3 full with cold water, then acquired the red food colouring, and added only a couple drops of it.
- We placed the lid back onto the jar and, using a pen made a hole large enough for the straw to fit into it.
- After putting the straw into the jar, making sure that it does not touch the base of the jar, we sealed the jar with the blue tack/ modelling clay, and stuck it on the straw, securing it to the lid of the jar, and containing the left over air in it too.
- We placed the jar into the sunlight for about 10 minutes or so and here is what happened:
